Nestlé and Helaina have embarked on a multi-year partnership to explore the role of bioactive proteins in early-life nutrition, focusing on human lactoferrin produced through precision fermentation.

Precision Fermentation of Human Lactoferrin

Helaina utilizes genetically engineered yeast to produce human lactoferrin, a complex glycoprotein essential for iron balance, immune function, and gut health. Their product, effera®, is bio-identical to the lactoferrin found in human breast milk and has been confirmed through detailed amino acid sequencing. This precision fermentation approach enables scalable production of a premium ingredient that differs structurally from bovine lactoferrin commonly used in adult nutrition.

Scientific Validation and Safety

Helaina has published 11 research papers on their human lactoferrin and self-affirmed effera® as Generally Recognized as Safe (GRAS). The ingredient has undergone evaluation for potential food allergy risks and demonstrated a low allergenic profile, supporting its suitability for infant nutrition applications. This extensive research underpins the collaboration with Nestlé to integrate bioactive proteins into infant formulas with clinical credibility.

Implications for Infant and Adult Nutrition

The partnership aims to expand understanding of bioactive proteins beyond lactoferrin, potentially exploring other ingredients in Helaina’s pipeline. While infant nutrition remains a rigorous regulatory and research challenge, Helaina is also advancing applications in adult nutrition sectors such as women’s health, gut health, and immunity. Nestlé’s involvement highlights a strategic commitment to open innovation and scientific advancement in nutrition.
